Garbanzo Inks Deal with Houston Franchise Group

January 6th, 2014

We announced today that we signed Houston franchise group Ella Bean to our growing restaurant enterprise.

Ella Bean is owned by area entrepreneurs and in-laws Tyson Shields, Kunal Aggarwal and Dan Aggarwal, and is operated by experienced area restaurateur Raj Bansal. With the rights to develop up to 10 Garbanzo units in the Houston market, the franchise group is currently considering locations in the Memorial and The Woodlands areas of Houston, and plans to open its first Garbanzo in the spring of 2014.

Shields’ and the Aggarwal’s other family businesses, Trudy’s Hallmark and Mason’s Jewelers, have been staples in the Houston area for more than 30 years combined. They own and operate the businesses in conjunction with Shield’s wife, Priya, and his mother-in-law, Kirti. An experienced restaurateur, Bansal has owned and operated Houston Quiznos® franchise locations for many years and brings a great deal of restaurant knowledge to the Garbanzo franchisee.

“Ella Bean is an influential group with significant entrepreneurial and restaurant history in the Houston marketplace,” explains Bob Bafundo, Garbanzo vice president of company and franchise operations. “The company’s close ties to the area paired with the community’s familiarity and interest in Mediterranean cuisine create an ideal setting for our healthy, fresh and authentic concept.”

Garbanzo has firm qualification criteria for potential franchisees. Only experienced, successful multi-unit restaurant operators who are well capitalized and interested in additional multi-unit growth with the Garbanzo brand are considered.

“Because I travel quite a bit, I tend to eat lunch out at lot. I noticed a healthy fast-casual option was missing from the Houston dining scene,” says Shields, Ella Bean owner. “Garbanzo caught my eye with its made-from-scratch recipes and fresh, healthy menu. Mediterranean food is also a trending segment that I see becoming increasingly popular as more people are appreciating its health benefits and delicious fare.”

“As the fourth-largest city in the U.S., Houston has a sizeable and diverse population with a thriving economy,” says Alon Mor, Garbanzo founder, president and CEO. “Garbanzo will offer locals and visitors a unique take on Mediterranean food that is not readily available in the city at this time.”

Franchising is one of Garbanzo’s key growth strategies building upon the success of its 18 company-owned restaurants in Colorado and Maryland.

Garbanzo Partners with Sodexo to Bring Healthy Fast-Casual to Non-Traditional Locations

November 19th, 2013

DENVER (November 19, 2013) – Colorado-based Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill, a fast-casual restaurant concept serving fresh and healthy Mediterranean cuisine, announced today the awarding of franchise development rights to Quality of Life services leader Sodexo, Inc.

Headquartered in Gaithersburg, Md., Sodexo operates in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and delivers on-site services in corporate, education, health care, government, and remote site segments, as well as benefits and rewards services and personal and home services.

As part of its preferred partnership agreement with the Mediterranean concept, Sodexo plans to open Garbanzo locations across the U.S. in its health care, education, government and corporate business segments where insights support the consumer’s preference for authentic Mediterranean cuisine.

“The frontrunner in quality of life services, Sodexo is the ideal partner to help introduce Garbanzo to these non-traditional markets,” says Bob Bafundo, Garbanzo vice president of company and franchise operations. “They are representative of the fresh and healthy standards for which Garbanzo is known, making this collaboration ever more relevant for the future of non-traditional dining.”

“As a company we are committed to bringing quality and variety to our customers every day, as well as to the overall well-being of the communities we serve,” said John Wright, vice president of offer development, Sodexo. “Garbanzo is an emerging concept that is quickly gaining recognition in the marketplace as consumer demand grows for Mediterranean and its health benefits.  Garbanzo’s authenticity, adventuresome menu and brand personality made it a natural choice in supporting our national brand strategy.”

“Health care, corporate and education environments provide access to a large population who emphasize healthy eating and living,” explains Alon Mor, Garbanzo founder, president and CEO. “We are excited to offer a fresh and authentic Mediterranean experience to these guests throughout the U.S.”

Franchising is one of Garbanzo’s key growth strategies building upon the success of its company-owned restaurants in both Colorado and Maryland.

Garbanzo has firm qualification criteria for potential franchisees. Only experienced, successful multi-unit restaurant operators who are well capitalized and interested in additional multi-unit growth with the Garbanzo brand are considered.

Garbanzo offers guests a variety of authentic Mediterranean items with an emphasis on flavor, freshness and quality, as well as a healthy trans-fat free menu. Guests have the ability to customize every meal with items such as pita, laffa, falafel, shwarma, hummus, seasoned rice, sauces and dressings. All Garbanzo salads and sauces are prepared on-site daily, and the pita are made from scratch throughout the day in every restaurant. Additionally, several ingredients are bought locally and some are imported directly from the Mediterranean region. For more information about Garbanzo, visit www.EatGarbanzo.com.

Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill Tests MyBread Gluten-Free Pita

November 19th, 2013

DENVER (November 12, 2013) – Garbanzo Mediterranean Grill is testing MyBread gluten-free pre-baked pita in its Aurora, Lone Tree and Glendale, Colorado locations now through April 2014. If the test determines MyBread pita is a viable option for the restaurant concept, additional or all Garbanzo locations will begin carrying the gluten-free product.

Founded by a diagnosed celiac, MyBread is a 100 percent dedicated gluten- and nut-free wholesale bakery located in Chicago, Ill. MyBread’s pita is certified by The Gluten-free Certification Organization (GFCO), which represents the strictest standards in third party certification.

“Many of our menu items are naturally gluten-free, and over the years our guests have come to know us as a gluten-free-friendly restaurant,” explains Alon Mor, Garbanzo founder, president and CEO. “Considering our pitas are one of our signature items, we wanted to offer guests a gluten-free alternative. MyBread, founded and operated by someone who personally faces dietary restrictions due to celiac disease, is a good option for customers trying to avoid gluten.”

“It’s exciting for us to see such a strong commitment to the gluten-free consumer from a top quality, growing restaurant chain such as Garbanzo,” says Ryan Scott, a MyBread founding member and director of sales and marketing. “While it is becoming more and more common to see gluten-free options at restaurants, it is our personal experience that regional and national restaurant groups have lagged a bit behind. When presented with the idea of adding a gluten-free pita, it was immediately apparent that the Garbanzo management team saw value and an opportunity to commit to a growing, loyal and outspoken customer base.

“By pairing Garbanzo’s flavorful, authentic and healthy dishes with our gluten-free pita, I am confident we can provide those who adhere to a gluten-free diet with an experience they haven’t had in a long time, if ever!”

Locations currently testing MyBread gluten-free pita:

Cornerstar
6750 S. Cornerstar Way
Aurora, CO 80016

Lincoln Commons
9996 Commons St.
Lone Tree, CO 80124

Glendale
630 S. Colorado Blvd.
Glendale, CO 80246

Garbanzo is following strict handling procedures for MyBread pita to help avoid gluten cross contamination. The restaurant concept, which makes its own pita from scratch in each location throughout the day, is not a gluten-free facility, however, and does not guarantee zero cross contamination in its stores.
