A: Mediterranean is the cuisine of the areas around the Mediterranean Sea (Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, southern France, parts of Italy, etc.) that emphasizes fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, olive oil and grilled or steamed meats.
The diet can vary based on the region, as what is eaten varies significantly from one Mediterranean country to another. There also are major differences in diet between some regions within a country, as in Italy. However, the shared features of what is usually spoken of as the Mediterranean-style diet are as follows:
High consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, beans, nuts and seeds
Dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts
Common foods include hummus, falafel, pita, etc.
There are many studies that show a variety of health benefits from a Mediterranean diet.
